There are so many features that make Google+ Pages better than Facebook Business Pages that one blogger predicts Facebook will soon become the AOL of social networks within the next few years. Perhaps it’s because you can “Stream” (speak) to specific segments of your audience that consists of your: Following , Customers, VIPs or Team Members in separate circles.

On the morning after Door County’s windstorm, author Wayne Breitbarth was in Sturgeon Bay at Glas to present a dynamite lecture with step-by-step instructions on how to maximize LinkedIn for business… too bad only 4 people were able to get there to benefit!

But, I was one of them and I came equipped to deal with the dilemma. With Wayne’s permission, I recorded the entire event on HD video and will share the highlights at our next Social Media Breakfast Door County event on Wednesday, October 19 in Ellison Bay at Brew Coffeehouse. Proprietor, Jennifer Lee is baking a coffee cake, which will be available at 9 am for a 1/2 hour of socializing. The presentation will begin at 9:30 am and will include large-screen projected videos and a discussion of Wayne’s 6 Power Tips for LinkedIn. The presentation was exceptional at Glas, and I look forward to sharing it you.

The February monthly SMBDC meeting, hosted by The Inn at Cedar Crossing will explore smartphones and mobile Web marketing on Wednesday, February 16 from 9 – 10:30 am.

You have probably been seeing them and wondering what they are doing on the back of a business card, on a postcard, a billboard, a catalog or a newspaper ad. They are starting to appear in Google Place listings and on many savvy Websites. Those little black and white patchwork quilt patterns made up of what look like random squares are not random…

Common in Japan, where it was created by Toyota subsidiary Denso-Wave in 1994, the QR code is one of the most popular types of two-dimensional barcodes. QR is the abbreviation for Quick Response, as the creator intended the code to allow its contents to be decoded at high speed.

A smart phone can scan QR codes with its camera, either with an application that a user downloads or via software that’s already installed on the phone. To find out what application to use for your phone, we recommend doing a Google search for the model of your phone + “QR reader.”

At the close of 2010 when Time Magazine named Mark Zuckerberg their person of the year, they not only paid homage to the creator of Facebook. They also recognized the dynamic change that he has brought about in the way that more than 500 million people live and share their lives in the digital age. Soon after, the Washington Post announced that Facebook had ascended into the number one position as the world’s most visited Website. What was once a Google-centric Web has become a people-centric Web.

But, something even greater has taken place. We no longer think of Facebook as a Website. It has become a place… a virtual place that you go to when you want to hang out and check in with your friends. The next monthly meeting of the Social Media Breakfast Door County (SMBDC) group will explore what this shift means to the Peninsula’s business owners, independent artists and non-profit organizations who are seeking the greatest return on their marketing investment.

“How Facebook Pages are the new Yellow Pages – and the listings are free,” will be January’s topic of discussion led by new media marketing consultant Stephen Kastner, founder of the SMBDC meetings. “The past decade was all about building a World Wide Web of information delivered in Websites,” says Kastner. “The next decade is already more about the World Wide Web of people.”

Kastner publishes a free book, “6 Steps to Becoming a Social Business” in which he quotes Professor Sut Jhally, founder of the Media Education Foundation: “Advertisers have to go to where the audience is… if they want to sell products. They have no option but to go where the audience has gone. If the audience has gone online, gone to iPods, gone to Facebook – wherever the audience has gone – that is where advertisers must go.”

The book is a never-ending project, written about a subject that is continuously changing. Printing it would be a waste of time Kastner says. In three months it has already had more than 15 revisions, the most-recent of which moves Facebook into the “First Step” position in order of importance. On the third Wednesday of each month, Kastner brings real people together at various Door County locations to have a breakfast dialogue about social media. The January breakfast will be sponsored and hosted by Brew Coffee House in Ellison Bay. December Social Media Breakfast Door County Turnout Sets New High Marks #SMBDC

Maybe it was the delicious breakfast buffet provided by December’s SMBDC sponsor, the Harbor Fish Market & Grille in Baileys Harbor or maybe it was the featured topic, “Finding Your Place in Google,” but on the third Wednesday in December, approximately 30 people joined in a lively discussion and saw on-screen examples of how to harvest the benefits of Google Places.

The December monthly marketing workshop discussion moderated by Social Media Breakfast Door County (SMBDC) founder Stephen Kastner brought forth a new awareness of what “local” means to the world’s former top Website. While it was announced in late December that Facebook has surpassed Google as the busiest Website on earth, there are lots of free benefits offered to anyone who knows how to claim their business listing on Google Maps and Places.

Kastner showed the difference between a default business listing and one that has validated their ownership of a bricks-n-mortar map listing now known as Google Places.

“Ten photos, 5 videos, a detailed description with business hours-of-operation – you can even create a custom coupon,” says Kastner. “And, it’s all for free.”

With the ever-increasing use of Internet search to find local businesses and being located in a tourism zone, Door County businesses need to perfect their listings in GPS enabled map and search sites including Google, Bing and Yahoo. You can get the details on maximizing your Google options in a free book “6 Steps to Becoming a Social Business” published by Kastner’s DesignWise Studios of Door County.

Incentive and Business Travel Industry Says Holograms, Hemp and Vertical Industry Growth Are What’s in Store for 2011

IMEX America and industry thought-leaders release predictions for coming year’s $100B US events travel market. Will Door County get a healthy share?

In anticipation of its debut in 2011, IMEX America (www.imexamerica.com), the US’s new worldwide exhibition for the incentive travel, meetings and events business, today announced the findings of a predictions survey conducted with a number of CEO’s and thought leaders in the industry.

The inaugural IMEX America show, being held in Las Vegas October 11-13, 2011 at the Sands Expo and Venetian/Palazzo comes from the IMEX Group, organizers of the award-winning IMEX in Frankfurt show (www.imex-frankfurt.com). IMEX America has the singular but far reaching goal of unleashing the energy and future growth of the US meetings market which is an important driver of US jobs and economic health generating over $100B annually and driving over 1M jobs (Source: Meetings.net 2009.)

Participants in the IMEX America 2011 prediction survey included:

  • John Graham, President and CEO of ASAE: The Center for Association Leadership headquartered in Washington DC

Findings from the survey indicate that:

Growth Will Be Spurred By Select Client Industries: Watch for the meetings and events industry –that proved resilient through a tough 2010 — to start to grow in 2011. US growth will likely be lead by clients in the pharma, technology, sports and service industries. These same industries will set the pace for any global growth in 2011 with Asia and Brazil continuing to be hotbeds.

Going Green Will Get More Formal & Vocal: Expect green efforts to ramp up in 2011 with more organizations focusing on tackling a top list of tangible steps they can take to make a difference, and putting their green/CSR event policies in writing. Also listen for more proactive and regular communications around green performance stemming from more disciplined tracking and reporting.

Natural & Shared Resources Will Be “In” … Waste Out: Look for a growing use of natural, recyclable and biodegradable materials like hemp and compostable/corn-based “plastics” to be used at events for everything from booth carpeting, bags and utensils/cups/plates … to badges and lanyards.

Additionally venues and lodging offering natural lighting, access to public or shared transportation, water conservation programs, and bulk dispensers for condiments and toiletries will become increasingly attractive.

‘Locavore’ Dining Will Bring it Home: In 2011 event planners — on behalf of their clients — will increasingly demand local, organic and seasonal produce and ingredients be used for food services at shows and events.

Technologies Like Holograms Will Be in the Cards & Hybrid Elements Will Become More Seamless: Don’t expect to see live presenters being replaced overnight, but with technologies like TelePrescence and Eyeliner out there we’ll start to see Hologram technology become more mainstream in 2011 … putting global experts at the fingertips of attendees and organizers alike. At the same time, a blend of virtual and live meeting elements will continue to become more tightly integrated to enrich meeting experiences– particularly video and telepresence whose costs are coming down making them more accessible and extending the value and content of live meetings post-event and for distant audiences.

Social Media Use Will Get More Strategic & Personal: In the coming year conversations will be less about driving social media outreach en masse and more about using specific tools and approaches through Twitter or Facebook to make communications even more personalized. Building a sense of community and creating 2-way+ conversations around specific events will also be important. Delegate ownership of content will rule.

Mobile Meeting Apps Will Continue to Grow But so Will Integration: More and more mobile applications will be developed and offered before, during and after 2011 meetings and events but the key will be to integrate them in a way that makes increasing business sense.

Short Term Bookings Will Continue to Set the Pace: In the coming year, US companies hosting events and meetings will still wait until the last minute to book in the hopes of scoring discounts … even if they have to sacrifice choice. This trend will likely become the norm overtime in the US and globally.

Incentive Travel Will Be Back: In 2011 incentive travel will be back in fuller force as a key way for companies to reward and retain top performers. Creative and tight use of budgets will remain, but there will be an uptick in booking luxury hotels/resorts, and international destinations.

Events Will Leave A Positive Community Legacy Behind: In 2011 watch for more shows and their participants to engage with their host communities — providing support around issues and challenges that local cities and regions are facing. Giving back could include donating food to shelters, supporting local schools, sending a team in to build a new playground before they leave for home, and more.

Harbor Fish Market & Grille to Host Next Social Media Breakfast Door County #SMBDC Wed, Dec 15

Social networking means “More honey in Door County, when DCBs create a hive mind.”

“In most human affairs, the idea is to think globally and act locally,” wrote Pulitzer Prize winning French humanist René Dubos in 1972. For more than four decades Stephen Kastner has been following that directive in northeastern Wisconsin starting with the peninsula’s first Nordic Ski center in 1971 when that was an emerging sport.

“We started a newspaper guide to ski trails in Door County back then, for a sport that no one but Al Johnson and I even knew existed,” he chuckles. “But, we printed 5,000 copies and delivered them to ski shops all over Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois… and the rest is history.”

It’s much faster and easier to get news and information distributed now, but the tools have changed. Blogs, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are gaining an exponentially increasing number of users who spend more time online at home, in the office and on the road – using handheld devices for communication and navigation. These ever-changing Web tools are the focus of Kastner’s Social Media Breakfast Door County (SMBDC) events taking place at different venues on the 3rd Wednesday of each month.

On Wednesday, December 15 from 9 – 10:30 am, the Harbor Fish Market & Grille will host the latest SMBDC meeting at their Baileys Harbor location, with a free buffet breakfast for participants. The event will lead-off with an exploration of “Google’s View of the World,” beginning with why a Gmail business account is key to unlocking a wealth of free marketing resources. There will be a live online workshop demonstration of how to claim your free listing in “Google Places,” enhancing your map listing with photographs and videos. Further discussion will focus on the future of Web design when seen from a Smartphone’s perspective. The meetings are open-ended so a question and answer session is always included.

In November, more than 15 leaders from local not-for-profits met for an SMBDC gathering at Glas Coffeehouse to get an overview of how social media works in their organizations. It was agreed that a step-by-step approach would greatly benefit everyone starting to take up these new methods of marketing online. With that in mind, Kastner will center the following meetings around each of the chapters of his free book on social media, “6 Steps to Becoming a Social Business.” The chapters include: Google, WordPress, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn and the book is available as a downloadable PDF here or at his DesignWise.net.

Social Media Breakfast Door County #smbdc Focuses on Non-profits Networking with SM, Nov 17 at Glas

“How Non-profit Organizations Benefit from Using Social Media” is the topic slated for the next monthly meeting of Social Media Breakfast Door County (SMBDC), a new community learning concept spearheaded by DesignWise Studios marketing consultant, Stephen Kastner.

“We’ll meet in the upstairs conference room at Glas, the Green Coffeehouse in Sturgeon Bay this month from 9 – 10:30 am on Wednesday, November 17,” says Kastner “and we’ll have two other guest panelists joining with me… each of whom serves as staff or directors of different Door County non-profit organizations. We’ll discuss the challenges we all experience in shifting toward a new method of growing and communicating with a public fan base online.”

PANELISTS:

  • Christine Salmon, Community Relations Director for United Way of Door County will explain how her team uses social media and earned media to get the United Way message out to the public.
  • Trudy Herbst, Development Director at the Door County Maritime Museum will speak about her experiences reaching out to the public with social media and demonstrating the value to her board members.
  • Stephen Kastner is also Door County director of Operation Welcome Homes, a non-profit 501c3 that brings Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans to Door County for free vacations. He will explain some of the ways he uses Facebook and YouTube for fundraising and show audience members various analytical tools that any business can use to track the effectiveness of a social media campaign.

Glas features a variety of bakery and breakfast menu items as well as coffee beverages and tea that may be purchased downstairs and brought up to the 2nd floor conference room. Participants are encouraged to bring their laptops and wireless devices in order to join in the dialogue as DesignWise techs will project a live Twitterstream comment display as the meeting takes place. Slides and Website examples will also be projected on a large backdrop screen.

Door County’s monthly Social Media Breakfasts take place at different locations around the Peninsula on the 3rd Wednesday of each month.
